As a kind of new retailing format, shopping centers have developed rapidly in some major cities of China, especially in Shanghai. Based on the development experiences of shopping centers in developed countries, the study of shopping centers in Shanghai will contribute to the further development of China's retailing geography academically, and to the development of retailing industry in China pragmatically. Funded by International Council of Shopping Centers Education Foundation (ICSCEF), this thesis examines the development patterns of shopping centers in Shanghai as well as their impacts on the restructuring of the city's commercial landscape.This thesis is composed of eight chapters. Chapter one provides the research background and literature review for the research project. Using the North America as an example, Chapter two gives a brief introduction of the key types and development trajectory of shopping centers in developed countries. Chapter three analyzes the external factors that may affect the development of shopping centers, and the relationships among the major interest parties involved in the management affairs of shopping centers. This chapter also comments on different formats and the frequently-used business models of shopping centers. Chapter four discusses major types of retailing format, as well as the current status and future development of the retailing industry in Shanghai.Chapter five, six, and seven study shopping centers in Shanghai from different perspectives. Chapter five discusses the major characteristics of shopping centers in Shanghai in terms of investment source, scale, and composition of anchor stores and goods etc. Chapter six concludes the thesis as follows.1, Development patterns of shopping centers in Shanghai.
