As a new solution for the optical fiber access network, EPON combines the advantages of PON technology and Ethernet technology and is able to meet the user demand with low cost. WiMAX is a main standard of 3G broadband wireless access network. It is featured by its wide coverage and flexible access, promising a bright commercial future. The integration of wireless access and fiber access is in good accordance with the trend of the access network as becoming more broadband and ubiquitous. The integration of EPON and WiMAX is one of the important techniques of the optical and wireless integration.This paper is mainly deployed on the design and realization of the core functions of the embedded software for EPON and WiMAX integrated new-style access system, such as the SNMP module and the implementation of the MAC protocol of WiMAX, with the supporting of National 863 project "The key technology of dynamic heterogeneous integrated access network supporting P2P and multicasting".The major work of this paper is listed as follows.1) The embedded Linux development environment is established which includes the U-Boot, embedded Linux system and file system. The Linux system can run stably in the embedded equipment.2) The requirements analysis of SNMP module of the embedded software based on Linux system is completed. The packet-processing sub-module and the event-reporting sub-module are designed and developed. The packet-processing sub-module is required to parse and process SNMP protocol packet, while the event-reporting sub-module need to handle alarms from the device and report them to the network manager, The result of the design is proved to be met the demand of the embedded software after being tested and verified.3) According to the tructure and characters of merged network, complete the requirements analysis of the embedded software of WiMAX and bring forward the overall structure of software for MAC protocol of WiMAX. Describe in detail about the requirements analysis, design, realization and function test of the scheduling sub-module, the queue sub-module and WiMAX phy board's device driver. Each sub-module passes the test and meets the design requirements.
