With the development of the communication technology and the rapid growth of the communication service, the speed of the network transport is becoming faster and faster, the network capacity is becoming larger and larger. OTN mesh network supports the transporting service of the backbone. It provides large network bandwidth, stable performance and low cost to support various services and signals. It becomes the bearer of next generation telecommunication network services. With the growing dependency on communication, any network failure could cause large economic loss. High-efficiency, stable and flexible network protection method is a must of next generation optical network. There are two kinds of optical network protection method currently: protection switching and restoring. The former one is widely used. Linear protection switching and ring protection switching are frequently-used protection switching methods. Their functions have been realized on current OTN device. However, the linear and ring protection switching could not satisfy the mesh network protection requirements. In 1998, P-cycle algorithm was raised. This algorithm is designed especially for the mesh network and has a high-efficiency. It is an excellent mesh network protection algorithm. This paper analyzes the P-cycle algorithm advantages in the real network from the optical level and electric level, lists all the services supported by P-cycle, and raises the P-cycle planning principles in the real network. This paper also raises a P-cycle realization solution which is based on manufacturer's current hardware and software platform. The solution reuses the mechanism and protocol of the ring protection, realizes the P-cycle protection functions and solves the protection resource conflicting problem in the mesh network. This solution is going to be realized into software on current OTN device.
