Transport network is the basis of the entire telecommunications network, which provides transmission channels and delivery platform for the businesses carried on the network. With the rapid development of optical transmission technology, network management technology turns towards the direct management of optical layer. The conventional performance parameters such as Bit Error Rate (BER), Loss Of Signal (LOS), Loss Of Frame (LOF) can only be measured in the electrical domain and so far, the performance parameters that can be accurately detected in the optical domain are optical power, optical signal to noise ratio and the center wavelength. Among the optical domain performance parameters, optical power is most convenient and most direct. Therefore, in the daily maintenance of telecommunications network, maintenance personnel are increasingly concerned about the optical power to understand the operation of the network status. And in the Fault handling of network management optical power data are also used as a basis for fault diagnosis. Through the comparison of current optical power and its benchmark, combined with the physical link relationship of the optical fiber, we can locate the source of the fault. Thus, Optical power can reflect the operation status of optical transmission network and it is an important performance indicator of transport network.With the development of the optical transmission technology, the amount of information carried by optical transport network becomes increasingly large. When a network failure (such as fiber fracture) occurs, the affected business will be very large. Hence, in the routine maintenance of optical transmission network, we must pay attention to optical power performance data collection and performance analysis in order to discover and deal with hidden dangers before they occur. Through the construction of optical power management system to achieve the overall management of optical power can help maintenance personnel to detect and deal with network failures and improve the availability of transmission network.In this paper, an overview of the types and analysis methods of optical power indicators in transport network is given. The paper also analyzes the current management status of optical power to identify the existing problems. Then, the paper outlines the requirement of optical power management system, gives its design and implementation and also verifies its main functions. Finally, the paper applies the optical power indicators to the fault management of OTN and proposes a scheme to detect and locate the failures in OTN based on optical power analysis.
