With the rapid development of the information, the existing networkbandwidth and transmission cannot satisfy the human’s needs. Wavelengthdivision multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) becomes thedevelopment direction of next generation access networks because of its widebandwidth、network security and easy to upgrade the structure. WDM-PONstructure tends to be more and more complex by increasing of network users andthe diversity of network services and the node density and multi-branchstructure characteristics bring many challenges to WDM-PON fault detection.Therefore it is vital significance for WDM-PON operation and development toseek a kind of fault detection technology with easy operation, rapid detect andlocalize the fault and low cost.After researching and analyzing the existing WDM-PON fault detectiontechniques, we put forward a new high precision WDM-PON fault detectingtechnique that it combines amplified spontaneous emission which has a goodnoise correlation and tunable broadband with related algorithm. Basing on the technology, the main research works are summarized asfollows:1. In-depth research for the development and application technology ofWDM-PON and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of WDM-PONfault location.2. We have analyzed erbium-doped fiber ASE source and introduced severaltypical ASE light sources.3. The double pass backward ASE source and transmission system ofWDM-PON are simulated by OptiSystem software. The simulation resultsverify the output characteristic of ASE broadband light source and WDM-PON baseband transmission are all excellent.4. We study the WDM-PON fault detecting by combining amplifiedspontaneous emission with related algorithm. The results show that thetechnique can achieve high precision of the WDM-PON fault detection, thedynamic range is23dB, the spatial resolution can reach centimeter scaleand is independent with measuring range.5. We make a summary of our research work and give expectation.
