Wireless sensor networks (WSN) is a self-organized measuring and controlling network composed of many tiny sensor nodes with communication and computing ability. It is gathering a lot of research interest due to its important applications in military, industry, household, environment, etc. Because sensor nodes are usually powered by batteries, and it is not always possible to replace or charge the batteries in some application environments, it is a real challenge to make the best of multi sensor nodes to reduce the total energy consumption and balance the energy-load of the network. As an essential step for various applications of WSN, the energy consumption of data transmission is a main part of the total consumption, so designing energy efficient data transmission mechanism is a key problem. This paper investigates data aggregation mechanism in wireless sensor networks, summarizes the characteristics and functions of data aggregation, learns, classifies, analyses and compares existing data aggregation methods in wireless sensor networks. The main research contents and innovations in this paper are as follows:This paper investigates the coalition-based cooperative data transmission mechanism (CC-DTM), analyzes its entire energy consumption, and finds out the optimal number of sensor nodes needed in the cooperative data transmission. The condition under which CC-DTM is more energy-saving than the cluster approach is also deduced. Furthermore, an energy-load balanced node selection strategy is proposed. The results of simulation experiment show the validity of this energy efficient data transmission mechanism. This paper presents an optimal routing strategy for Coalition Based Data Aggregation. The distance between the Coalition Centric and next coalition head becomes an important factor for routing selection, and a negative feedback mechanism based on ant colony system guides this routing strategy. The results of simulation experiment show that this strategy not only can guarantee good routing direction, but also balance the routing energy load and extend the network lifetime.
