Because of the high costs, not suitable for long-distance transmission and needed in the special duty of the traditional analog video surveillance system, there is an urgent need to study one kind of digital image monitoring system to address these shortcomings. In recent years, with the development of embedded system technology, image compression technology, making a low cost, suitable for long-distance transmission and do not need in the special duty embedded digital image monitoring system possible.This paper designs a embedded image capture/compression system based on ARM9 microprocessor for general real-time remote vedio monitoring system, reliable, simple, economical and practical needs. First, this paper analysis a variety of image coding standard, studies the JPEG compression algorithm, and gives the JPEG compressed data format. Then completed the structural design of the core hardware which uses S3C2410X as the core processor, the CMOS image sensor OV9653 and JPEG dedicated compression chip ZR36060 as the image capture/compression system,the system also includes SDRAM, Nand FLASH, Serial Ports, NIC, JTAG and so on. On the software side, this paper have accomplished the transplanting of bootloader, Linux kernel and root file system so that to build a complete platform of embedded system. And also accomplishes drivers of devices which are OV9653, ZR36060 and CS8900A. At last, it introduces the debugging and performance testing processes of hardware and software.This embedded image capture/compression system which based on ARM microprocessor, CMOS image sensor and JPEG dedicated compression chip has good promotional value because of it's simple circuits, small size, low power consumption and good reliability obvious advantages.
