The traditional Ethernet-based distributed vehicle inspection system has some disadvantages, such as complicated structure, high cost, difficulty of large-scale promotion and so forth. Using Ethernet communications, it is easy to be vulnerable to viruses, and the real-time performance and reliability are difficult to be guaranteed. In order to solve this problem, a new vehicle inspection system based on CAN bus is developed.The system uses CAN bus instead of the traditional Ethernet, embedded ARM instead of the traditional industrial control computer, and combines the main control computer, applied inspection computer, database servers into one, so it simplifies the structure of distributed vehicle inspection system and reduces the system cost to a large extent. Using LM3S8962 ARM chip, a universal type of embedded-station machine is designed for the system. The machine can be used at any station with all the detection function. Thus it provides great convenience for the installation and maintenance in the future. CH365 is also used to design CAN communication card based on the PCI bus, which supports communication of the main control computer and CAN bus. A multi-priority data packet format capable to distinguish different nodes and data is designed to meet the needs of CAN-bus-based real-time communication. Finally, the PC software for vehicle inspection register, vehicle scheduling and database management is developed on the platform of the developed system hardware.Numerous tests in the laboratory and applications in the field show that the system has many advantages, such as simple structure, low cost, good extensibility, easy maintenance and so on, and it can meet the needs of practical applications.
