Containers are playing an increasingly important role in modern logistics industry. While during transporting, the goods'damage event occurs frequently, which has aroused the attention from transportation industry. So, the real-time monitoring and tracking of containers is necessary in the transport. With the development of short distance wireless communication technologies, applying wireless sensor network (WSN), which is restricted by energy, is the developing trend of container monitoring system. Energy consumption in the process of multi-container monitoring can be cut down by using proper routing algorithm, while many current routing algorithms can't be used perfectly in this application. So, it is necessary to design a low power routing algorithm for multi-container monitoring to enhance the energy efficiency and prolong the network lifetime.Firstly, we built container monitor based on wireless sensor network in order to enhance the system's flexibility and make the function can be expanded. Then, taking it as the foundation, we designed a low power monitoring method for multi-container monitoring on ships based on LEACH protocol, and discussed the problems in applying LEACH to the container monitoring system in detail. Thirdly, aiming at the applying problems, this paper mainly studied LEACH protocol and improved LEACH and then proposed the improved LEACH algorithm for multi-container monitoring (LCMS). Lastly, some simulations were done using Matlab, and the results showed that using LEACH in the application cut down the energy consumption and LCMS solved the problems in applying LEACH into multi-container monitoring.
