Ultrasound technology has many advantages, such as cheapness, safty, convenience and so on, but still there is bulky, high power consumption disadvantages in the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus. Portable digital ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus is based on embedded ARM and FPGA hardware platform and embedded LINUX operating system, which has low cost and low power consumption to achieve higher performance compared with the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus. And it can process a variety of ultrasound video image digital signal, achieve the further quality of image.Portable B-mode ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus system is made up of the human computer interface by the ARM side and FPGA-side imaging systems and display system. Using high-performance of ARM processor and a stable embedded Linux2.6 core to receive the real-time data through FPGA-side transmission, the ARM processor will complete the human computer interface and LCD display function, so the ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus can get high-performance of ARM and linux. It can create a richer user interface and the completion of more complex image processing. This paper begins with ultrasound principles and equipment overall design, describes each functional module in a portable ultrasound device, and also introduces the ARM and FPGA design and structural characteristics. The next focus of this article on how to construct the embedded linux software platform on ARM S3C2440 hardware platform, besides, also describes how to transplant the bootloader and embedded linux 2.6 kernel and yaffs2 file system. On this basis, explains the desigh of the drivers of linux about ultrasound equipment. Finally this paper presents a kind of design and implementation of B-mode ultrasonic system's cinloop module based on FPGA.We studied the operating principle of SDRAM and embedded a SDRAM controller in the module, designed Finite State Machines to do the sequential control of the video data acquisition. All of these was implemented with VHDL program and was convenient to embedded into the project which used the FPGA.
