Wireless Sensor Network (WSN),which integrates the combination of computer technology, communication technology and sensor technology, is of great concern around the world, has broad application prospects in the military, security, production, transportation, daily life, and many other areas. In recent years, it's the hot spot of research and application field in wireless communications. However, due to the limited energy of sensor nodes and the inconvenience to supply, energy-saving is the primary consideration for the design of wireless sensor networks at all levels. Besides, the energy consumption of communication has accounted for most of the sensor node energy consumption, to design energy saving communication protocol has become an important means of energy conservation of the wireless sensor networks, has also become a focus of study in the field of wireless sensor networks. Aiming at problems of the classic routing protocol, a multi-hop clustering protocol based on shiftwork for WSN (MCPS) is proposed and implemented. MCPS has a new and more reasonable cluster head competition, furthermore, MCPS balance the load and reduce energy consumption by shift-work within the cluster and building routing tree in cluster heads after cluster generation. while considering nodes'communication cost, the protocol integrates the idea of load-balanced and reducing redundant data, effectively improved the network performance.Simulation results show that, network life cycle and the energy utilization efficiency of MCPS was significantly better than classical clustering protocol Leach.
