The 21st century is a information century, the video information is very popular for its direct, viewing, convenient and rich information content. With the developing of science and technology, the video surveillance system has been widely used in the industrial production, national security and daily life. The video monitoring technology fuses many technologies such as computer, multimedia communications, network and so on, which becomes one of the hot spots of people's studies and has the broad application prospect and the research value.The main purpose of this thesis is to design a digital remote video monitoring system, which have stable performance and strong process ability and combine the embedded technology with the computer network technology. The web server program runs under the embedded Linux system platform and acts as the server role in the system. It runs by means of backstage and waits for the client's request, thus realize monitor in LAN or Internet.The system consists of two parts which are the video surveillance terminals and the video surveillance network. The hardware platform of video surveillance terminal uses the microprocessor ARM9TDMI,produced by SAMSUNG Company in South Korea, whose main frequency is up to 203 MHz. The software platform uses the free embedded Linux operating system. The video surveillance terminal is responsible for collecting video images. In the thesis, the video images is captured through the implementation of USB camera, which is based on Vide04Linux programming interface under the Linux operating system. It is necessary to carry out the necessary treatment for the enormous amount of video image data. The system uses the MPEG-4 algorithm compresses to compress the image data. Finally, the compressed data stream is sent to video surveillance network platform for network transmission.The system can be widely used in the case that the screen image used as evidence, such as unmanned warehouse, home alarm monitoring, traffic monitoring and other fields. In such applications, the system does not require the achievement of continuous video surveillance, but only on a single specific picture(frame)and the need for these images to video editing, the use of evidence in order to facilitate security.The whole system is based on module constructer. Each module has relative independence, which enhances the system's robustness and flexibility. When one module needs to change, the others don't need great change which is a great advantage to upgrade the system. And the system uses the embedded solution which leads to the low cost and is easy to use and spread.
