Aiming at low-cost, high-intelligence requirements of the video surveillance system of laboratory (or family) and other small scale area, a solution of the video surveillance system is proposed in this thesis, which is suitable for laboratory (or family) and other small scale area. The rapid development of economy and science and technology makes security demands getting higher and higher. Besides, the rapid development of economy brings sharp increase in the city flowing population and adds new question to the public security. In order to protect the security of the community, their own security system is needed. The video surveillance system has the characteristic of straight and convenience, so it is attracting more and more attention.Based on the research of the embedded Linux operating system, a video surveillance system based on embedded Linux is designed. The overall system can be divided into two parts:the server and the client. The server includes the video image acquisition and transmission program of DM355 platform. The client contains the program of video image receiving, decoding, playback and analysis.Firstly, the video surveillance system research status, development dynamic and development trend are introduced. Then several key techniques the system involved are discussed, such as video encoding-decoding technology, embedded Linux technology, streaming media technology and so on. Then the hardware and software design and application written of the system are introduced. The system hardware platform is based on DM355 development board, which is made up of ARM926EJ-S kernel, MPEG-4/JPEG coprocessor, integrated video processing subsystem and multiple peripherals. While designing the software, the embedded Linux operation system Monta Vista Linux is designed. The operating system kernel is modified and compiled and then transplanted to the DM355 hardware platform. Application software program mainly include video image collection, compression, transmission and video playback module of video surveillance client. The post-processing means that the system is able to give the alarm when finding a suspicious or abnormal behavior of the target. Debug of the video surveillance system is implemented. MPEG-4 video codecs and G711 audio codecs are also realized. MPEG-4 video compression standard has the characteristic of high compression ratio, good dynamic features and so on. The video surveillance system takes the advantage of saving storage space and clear image of MPEG-4. The collected video image can transmit smoothly in the local area network. The delay and jitter cannot be felt basically by naked eye. The function and the stability of the system basically achieve the desired goal. Finally the accomplished targets in this thesis are summarized and the deficiency and improvement plan of the system are put forward.
