Currently, the vehicle navigation system has become an important solution to solve the traffic congestion caused by widely used vehicles in developing countries and developed countries. One of the effective solutions is to consider vehicles and roads comprehensively and use new hi-tech vehicle navigation systems to fix the congestion problems. In the existing navigation systems, embedded solutions became the focus of research and competitive core of firms and manufacturers. As navigation system information service requirements develop, and terminal hardware cost decreases, operating system software proportion becomes bigger, a fully functional, stable and compatible software operating system, that is easy to develop and maintain and update and to support the operation of embedded terminal hardware system, is particularly important.Android is composed of Embedded Linux and Java, including the operating system, user interface and applications, and it is claimed to be the first truly open and complete mobile operating system software for mobile terminals. Its structure and working principle make it the most portable operating system for mobile devices and it mainly applies in smart phones, digital appliances, set-top boxes and vehicle navigation systems, etc. and is the first choice for embedded system applications recently.Based on ARM microprocessor and Android operating system,the embedded vehicle navigation system terminal information platform, mainly aims to achieve automated vehicle location, traveling route design, route guide service, wireless communications and other basic functions, and tries to link the drivers and managers, roads and vehicles perfectly. In the study, advantages of high-performance and efficiency and high stability of ARM 9 microprocessor and operating system portability, scalability, easy maintenance and open source characters of Android could be taken into consideration, which would offer a proper applied solution to embedded system-like developments.Solutions used embedded system technologies to solve vehicle navigation systems based on ARM microprocessor and Android operating system have been studied according to their characteristics and functional requirements. In the filed of embedded vehicle navigation system research, features of the hardware platform, the external circuit design as well as hardware device drivers, application design in Android operating system would be mainly analyzed and explored. On the hardware platform, S3C2410A core processor and basic peripheral circuits combined with the keyboard, touch screen, LCD, and other independent hardware peripheral extending circuits , including GPS modules, its hardware circuit design and work principle have been introduced to ensure the feasibility of hardware design; based on the hardware platform, after having a deep understanding of the Android operating system's structure, the establishment of a complete cross-development environment to test and study its internal performance could be built to achieve the transplant from Android operating systems to vehicle navigation terminal hardware platforms. In hardware device drivers, such as driver of a keyboard, LCD, LAN, touch screen, SD card, and GPS locator program and Google Map digital map application have been developed to make the devices more valuable. In the research of the system, a lot of experiments have been done and many problems encountered in the experiments and their solutions have been introduced briefly.The application platform can be embedded into other terminal devices, such as mobile phones, PDA and so on. The thesis uses this design plan and combines with function interface of Android system to develop various embedded GIS information platform for the different intelligent terminals and different application requirements. Obviously, the platform is portable and expansible. In conclusion, the research work in the thesis will offer useful experience and significance to the relative staff in the same filed when they choose researh plans and study on project feasibility.
