With the development of society, people are in increasing needs for vehicles. It is of great importance to make vehicle communication system more safe and comfortable. In contrast to traditional infrastructure mode wireless network, Ad Hoc network is more flexible and robust for vehicle application. The performance of vehicular Ad Hoc networks is studied and improvements are made under verisimilar traffic scenes in this paper.First we build highway scene, regular city street scene and real traffic scene to study the performance of VANET(Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks) routings (table-driven routing, on-demand routing and position-based routing). The experiments about transmission of CBR flow, MPEG and H.264 video flow are carried out in this paper. In addition, A new GPS and map based predictive routing protocol named GMPR is proposed and it can significantly improve the performance of the VANET communication. On the base of the network simulation, we design a vehicle terminal, port hardware drivers of the modules included, configure the devices and build the whole hardware platform. And we develop and implement the functions such as Ad Hoc wireless communication, GPS positioning, map viewing, video capturing, audio and video playing, system settings and gaming etc. Finally, we test the performance of video transmission of three prototypes of the vehicle terminal which form an Ad Hoc network. The results show that the prototype can stably achieve several video functions such as capturing, storing, compressing, sending, receiving and implementing Ad Hoc transmission. Therefore, all the work in this paper has great reference value for applications of vehicular Ad Hoc networks.
