Long rail transmission is an important part of the rail welding production in base. A reliable transmission system is very useful to improve the operating efficiency and safety reliability of the long rail production lines and reduce the operating costs. However, through the investigation and analysis on the rail welding transportation control system in domestic, the old transmission control system was found to have such disadvantages as follows:first, because relays and contactors were primarily used to control in the old control systems, so it has shortcomings of poor reliability and high failure rate. Second, methods of series resistance were used in starting and speeding control of the alternating current motor, so it is complicated to operate and have a high energy waste. Third, the structure has large systems, high energy consumption and low efficiency. Based on above reasons, it has a practical significance to study the long rail transportation and design a new long rail transportation control system.In order to solve the mentioned problems above that exist in the long rail transmission control system, the following work had been done. First an approach was introduced to use the PLC and frequency converter into the system. Second, the appropriate frequency converter and PLC were selected according to the long welded rail production process and the layout position of the production line. Third, the field bus control network topology and control logic were designed and optimized. Then PLC program was developed to achieve the centralized controlling of the rail transmission, real-time exchange of information and feedback.The application in the Shibantan Rail-welding Factory of Chengdu Railway Bureau indicated that the reformed transmission system has implemented simple operation and greater efficiency in production. Moreover, it can met production requirements at the scene and improve the production capacity of the production line.
