Leaves are the most prominent visual feature of plants, and are one of the most decisive factors to affect visual effect. It is significant to study leaf modeling. A vivid and accurate model for leaves has special significance to virtual reality, digital agriculture, online education and so on. Leaves wilting will occur when affected by water, nutrients, light. Study on leaf wilting can be more realistic reproduction of natural phenomena, and has an important significance to agricultural, forestry research and application, teaching practice, digital library and so on. In this paper, we use cucumber leaves as an example, based on the study of leaf modeling method, veins generating, mainly study the leaf wilting model and rendering technology, design and develop a plant leaf wilting simulation visualization system. Main research work and conclusions include:(1)Based on analysis and comparison of kinds of the leaf modeling methods, using image-based modeling method to model leaf can extract accurate shape information, and employing merge-based minimum mean square error for polygonal approximation of contours of leaf can effectively reduce the points to represent leaf boundary.(2)On the study of leaf wilting simulation using mass-spring model and venation skeleton-driven method, a control curve based method is proposed to simulate the deformation during leaf wilting. Results show that it reaches good visual effect, but also has little computation.(3)Realistic graphic rendering technology has studied, and texture mapping is used to render leaf surface, which makes the leaf model more realistic.(4)Combination of the leaf modeling method and control curve based wilting model, based on the visual C++6.0 platform, a leaf wilting simulation system is developed using OpenGL. Results show this method can effectively express the deformation during wilting with good visual effect.
