Tailings pond is the necessary facility to maintain normal production for mines, but it is the major dangerous source. For a long time, methods of safety monitoring have been fell behind for tailings dam in out country, the artificial monitoring present some issues like the monitoring is not timely, sometimes with human errors; The traditional wired methods of measure need lay the cable, which is complex, and the adjustment, expansion, and maintenance of the measuring points are inconvenient. The ZigBee technology is a new low-power, short-latency and reliable wireless sensor network technology, it has the characteristics of large capacity, flexibility and low cost. The application of ZigBee can greatly reduce the cost of laying the cables used in wired networks, and the maintenance of the network is convenient.According to the present monitoring methods, this paper design the wireless sensor networks for the safety monitoring of tailings dam with the characteristics of unwired network transmission of ZigBee technology. Firstly, this paper design the sensor network node based on the CC2430, analyze the principle of vibrating wire sensor which is normally used in safety monitoring system of tailing dams, analyse the layers of the ZigBee protocol stack based on the TI's Zstack protocol, discuss the forming method of ZigBee sensor network including star, tree and mesh network, describe the process that the network coordinator set up the network, the process that node join the network, and the process that the data transfer. A network experiment has been done, data has been got from the air for analyse. Routing mechanism of the sensor network, especially the Ad hoc routing including DSDV,DSR and AODV are analyzed and discussed, the current ZigBee routing mechanism used in the protocol stack, especially the distributed network address allocation methods and data routing mechanism are analyed. The network has been simulated based on the NS2 simulation platform and ZigBee model, the simulation process of network formation and data transmission was discussed, the simulation results reveal that monitoring network has better performance using the ZigBee routing than the AODV routing.
