AVS is the second source coding standard with independent intellectual property in China. It has very broad prospects with high coding efficiency, low computational complexity and low patent costs. However, neither hardware nor software of AVS codec is fully developed. By research on AVS video coding standard and the key algorithms, the design of AVS codec based on MIPS microprocessor has been complemented in this paper. The major work in this paper is about software design of AVS codec as well as transplantation and optimization based on porting from MIPS-Linux kernel to the HDP-1205 development platform. Firstly, the system architecture and key technologies are introduced. According to the comparison of different codec schemes and analysis on the features and advantages of MIPS, the design scheme and system framework for AVS codec are proposed. Meanwhile, the specific development process is also given. Then, the cross-compiler environment on HDP-1205 development platform is set up based on MIPS kernel, and the functional cutting and transplanting of MIPS-Linux as well as coding design of AVS codec is complemented. Finally, the transplanted AVS code is optimized for MIPS structure characteristic, and the codec before and after optimization are tested and analyzed.Verification and test results show that a decoding frame rate of about 26.76 frames per second can meet the requirement of real-time decoding without quality loss for AVS codec based on MIPS kernel. As well, the proposed AVS codec with high efficiency can promote the industrialization applications of AVS.
