With obvious trend of international cooperation and global integration, the frequency of various international academic conferences was largely increased, so that the conference information system should be more digitalized, networked and intelligent. As the fast development of IEEE 802.11 technologies, there are more and more new wireless products with lower prices in the market, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) had a gradual shift from industrial production and public places into family usage. Many Wi-Fi supported mobile devices like smart phone, netbook and PDA, have been quite familiar by people. Therefore, a wireless conference information system based on WLAN, which fully use existing wireless devices and network products, should have great commercial value.According to the common characteristics of large academic conferences, a C/S mode wireless conference information system based on WLAN is designed in this thesis. Some basic functions like broadcast, agenda, public information, person search and wireless voting are integrated in this system. In addition, there are also some customized functions in this system, like PPT remote control, instant messaging and people radar, which make it easier for participants to expand interpersonal network. In overall system design, the existing wireless technologies and products are fully used, both server and devices are designed in a large Wireless LAN, besides, some important problems in WLAN planning are studied in detail. SQL Server database development and socket LAN communication with UDP protocol are involved in this thesis, the application program for server and device (Windows Mobile platform) are finally developed with Visual Studio 2005 based on.NET Framework platform. After comparing the usual WLAN positioning method, a method based on RSSI which is suitable for conference environment is suggested.Test results show that the effective network coverage and strong expansibility of this system can totally meet the requirements of large-scale conferences. The delay for communication between server and devices is too small to influence the normal usage. Furthermore, functions like broadcast, information search, instant messaging, PPT remote control and wireless voting work well. At last, the accuracy of people positioning is controlled within 10m, which could basically meet the requirement.
