Currently, the Internet has become an important tool for people's study, work and life. People's demand for wireless broadband access to Internet is increasing day by day. Since WLAN cannot achieve ubiquitous communication. In this context, wireless mesh network (WMN) emerges. WMN sets many advantages for people of concern, which is considered as an important part of the next generation Internet.Although the energy consumption of WMN has greatly reduced because of multi-hop technology, the limited energy issue of WMN clients is always a problem to be solved to improve network performance. Coupled with energy shortages in today's society, energy conservation has become increasingly important, and energy-saving products have become a trend. Therefore, how to design energy saving protocols and related technologies is one of important topics in wireless Mesh networks. This paper first introduces the basic concepts of wireless mesh networks and application scenarios, and some common routing and Mac protocols. And in accordance with the requirements of the wireless mesh network design, we investigate the common energy-saving methods and strategies. Then, we analyze the shortcomings of DCF-based mechanism of APCM system and propose an improved APCM mechanism, called MAPCM. We verify its effectiveness with OPNET. On this basis, we propose an improved protocol, called PSRC-DSR, which takes into account the residual energy of nodes and transmit power to low residual energy nodes, and is useful to extend the time of death of node and the network lifetime. Finally, the protocol is implemented with OPNET. We also evaluate the performances of DSR, JPBDSR and PSRC-DSR on OPNET platform. Simulation and analysis results show that network lifetime of PSRC-DSR protocol has a certain improvement and it can save the network energy.
