In this thesis, the finite element method(FEM) and electromagnetic wave theory of anisotropic are proposed to investigated the electromagnetic transmission characteristics of the metamaterials and its application in invisible cloak. The main work of author is as follows:1. The metamaterial is realized by Drude model, and the characteristics of cylindrical wave propagation in isotropic metamaterial slabs are discussed such as image focus, channelling effect and phase compensation.2. The characteristics of reflection and transmission of electromagnetic waves on the interface formed by an isotropic regular media and an anisotropic metamaterial are studied. Then the electric field distributions of TE-polarized wave for the interaction between Gaussian beam and four kinds of anisotropic metamaterial slabs are computed.3. According to the form invariance of Maxwell's equations in the initial and transformed space, the invisible cloak which can perfectly hide the inside object is discussed. Then the invisibility cloaks of circular, elliptic and square cross section are simulated respectively. At last the general formulas for invisibility cloaks of arbitrary cross section is derived.4. Using the theory of the phase compensation and coordinate transformation, the complementary cloak of circular cross section which can hide an object within a distance outside the cloak is analysed detailedly. Together with the application of long and thin objects, the complementary cloak of elliptic cross section is designed.
