' With the developme1lt of the phased array antenna system, it is very important toresearch on various phase shifters, particularly on a duaI-mode latching reciproJalferrite phase shifter. According to the reciprocal characteristic of dual-mcdereciprocal ferrite phase shifters, the antenna only requires to provide the sa:llebeams of operation between the trtinsmit and receive beams. In addition, 1hephased shifter can operate in various polarizations such as linear polarization orcircular polarization, which is adiipted to the development of modern ra(1artechnologies. So it is necessary to l-esearch on a dual-mode latching recipro:alferrite phase shifter. This paPer analyzes briefly the principle of reciprocal ferrite phase shift(rs,especially discuss the "dual-mode" t.nd "reciprocal". On the basis of complet':lyanalyses about dual-m()de phase shiftcrs, the finite-element fOrmulation derives thevariational principle fOr non-se1fadjoint electromagnetic problems which ismicrowave propagaticn in a aniso1ropic media loaded waveguide. Then, thevariatonal problem is approximated by a matrix eigenvalue problem. At last, i. isbelieved that the dual-mode reciprocal ferrite phase shifter has value in prac1iceaccording to the experimental data.
