A wireless ad hoc network is a collection of wireless mobile nodes that self-configure to form a network. The topology of a wireless ad hoc network, which is frequently changed due to node mobility, energy exhaustion and node death, has a significant effect on the network performance. How to maintain the network topology and enhance the network survivability is one of the main fields of the research of Network Management. This author takes part in the research project of Topology Control and Maintenance of wireless ad hoc network. Firstly, we introduce a topology maintenance algorithm based on the shortest path tree which can efficiently maintain the network connectivity with low overhead. Then, a topology control algorithm for constructing a minimum-energy path-preserving spanning subgraph for a wireless ad hoc network is discussed. By this algorithm, the entire network connectivity and the global minimum-energy path property can be efficiently maintained in a responsive manner as the network changes dynamically. Based on this algorithm, a fault-tolerant topology control algorithm is studied. The constructed topology can preserve a minimum-energy path between every-pair of nodes and make the network biconnected. Finally, the implementation of the fault-tolerant topology algorithm on a testbed ad hoc network is given. The implemented topology control algorithm meets the design goal of the project, and passes the test on the testbed network.
