Owing to the multiple services of network and the rising demand on bandwidth, WDM-PON becomes the best choice to solve the speed limit in access network. WDM-PON uses wavelength division to supply specific signal wavelength and bandwidth for each client, which in principle improves the ultilization ratio of transport. Compares with TDM-PON, WDM-PON has better performance on bandwidth, safety, OAM and upgrade. While the imperfect technology and the cost of device affect its development. Therefore, the technology of WDM-PON is currently an important field in optical communications research.How to reduce the cost of WDM system is an important factor in achieving market-oriented. In this paper, we proposed a novel WDM-PON system with colorless ONU (optical network unit) enabled by polarization multiplexing. It can not only reduce the cost of ONU but also design the unified ONU in different operating wavelength. Another frontier research of the paper is the application of reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) in the colorless ONU. We proposed a novel WDM-PON system combined with the advantages of polarization multiplexing and RSOA. RSOA can work as both optical amplifier and modulator. Its high performance meets the demand of high-speed optical communication system and simplifies the ONU system. It will be described in technical principles, experimental devices, experimental system implementations, system performance measurements and results analysis in detail of these two parts.
