In recent years, with the rapidly growing demand for multimedia services and the trend ofservice convergence, the penetration of optical fiber in access network is an ultimate solution tobreak the last-mile bottleneck imposed by the copper network. In the near future,wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) can be the enabler of thenext-generation optical broadband access that requires large bandwidth, protocol transparency andupgrade flexibility. Colorless program at optical network unit (ONU) is an attractive solution forlow-cost and high efficiency implementation of WDM-PON, as it reduces the cost of monitoringand maintenance of the system. This paper mainly studies on Rayleigh backscattering elimination and effect of the channeltransmission performance in a WDM-PON. First, the colorless WDM-PON network structure isproposed, and without considering the fiber Rayleigh backscattering of WDM-PON transmissionperformance is studied. This Colorless WDM-PON uses the direct re-modulation technique basedon the Mach-Zehnder modulator, and the paper studies the Channel’s BER performance of theuplink signal when using different modulations and coding schemes through simulation. Secondly,on the basis of the more detailed analysis of the generation mechanism of the WDM-PON Rayleighbackscattering, makes a comparison and analysis of the classic methods of eliminating Rayleighscattering effect, and proposes a new ring structure of WDM-PON, which remains colorlessadvantage. Finally, Optisystem software is used to emulate in this ring WDM-PON structure, andthe performance of the network transmission is discussed. As the result, this ring WDM-PONstructure can support up to eight optical network units through simulating and analyzing.
