Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is widely considered as a promising candidate for next generation optical access network technology due to its large transmission capacity, network security, and data transparency. While access network is very sensitive to the cost of network construction and maintenance, colorless optical network unit (ONU) based on uplink re-modulation is an attractive solution for the commercialization of WDM-PON due to its simple ONU structure and low system cost. The key technical issue of re-modulation WDM-PON system is how to reduce crosstalk from downlink signal to uplink signal. In this paper, a re-modulation WDM-PON system scheme based on novel mBnB line coding is proposed. The scheme can effectively improve the uplink transmission performance while ensure relatively high coding efficiency of downlink signal, and its feasibility is validated by system simulation and experimental demonstration. Reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA), which can realize the function of optical signal amplification and modulation at the same time, is an ideal device for re-modulation WDM-PON. After introduction of the principal of re-modulation WDM-PON using RSOA, we investigate the application of line coding in re-modulation WDM-PON with RSOA. Experimental results show that due to the use of line coding injected power of RSOA can be lower than the saturation input optical power, thus relaxing the constraint of downlink transmission power budget. In addition, with the emerging of various businesses, access network needs to have the function of multicast and broadcast. A multicast upgrade scheme of re-modulation WDM-PON system based on line coding is proposed in this paper, and is verified through theoretical analysis and system simulation.
