Printed circuit board (PCB) is the circuit board on which a number of electronic are located at predefined positions and wired through electrical connections. By 2006, China has become the largest PCB assembly country in the world. However the PCB assembly industry in China has only 30 years history since 1980 and does not have the core technologies, this is the bad news for the development of our PCB industry. PCB is assembled by the surface mount manufacturing system. This system is an advanced manufacturing system, which has characteristics of surface mount technology, flexible manufacturing systems and computer integrated manufacturing systems. In recent years, Scheduling the production of printed circuit boards(PCBs) in electronics manufacturing has been a subject of intense research, primarily motived by the need to develop newer and efficient methods to enhance productivity. Typically, the job orders received by producers from customers require that PCBs of various types and quantities be produced and delivered. If they are received from different customers and if the due dates desired by them are not so stringent, the producer's focus should be to minimize the mean flow time of all the job orders considered for production, so as to enhance the productivity of the assembly lines. This paper address the two-machine group-scheduling problem for minimizing the mean flow time with carryover sequence dependency, typically encountered in the manufacture of printed circuit boards (PCBs) in electronics manufacturing. An efficient solution algorithm based on genetics algorithm is developed to solve the problem. An experiment is performed to assess the effectiveness of the solution algorithm. The results reveal that the proposed algorithm is very effective and can be used in actual production.
