Virtual assembly means under the conditional of no real porduct using computers to give a frankly evaluation of the product's assembly ability and provide 3D animation to demonstrate the assembly process. Virtual assembly can verify the correctness and rationality of the assembly process, it makes the designer discover and eliminate the hidden design errors, so it can effectively reduce the product development cycle time, save costs, improve qualiy, incresae efficiency of production. In general, in the previous research path planning as a content of assembly sequence planning has a low sucesssful ratio, lack of effective detection means, fathermore it doesn't consider the important factor operating tool. In the issue of operating space some people have make some research but also exits some questions such as cannot select complex tools and motion modeal is simple, these problems limite its application. This paper makes research on path planning and operating space. In the non-immersed virtual assembly environment, a software used to analyse path planning and operating space is developed making use of the secondary development function of Unigraphics, and expected effect is obtained. Compared with previous studies, this paper made some improvements that it allows users to use complex tools and can simulate complex motion, more agrees with actual situation. Friendly human-machine interactive operating interfaces are developed by using Grip,UIStyler and Menu Script. The motion of tools is simulated making use of the kinematics of robot. The inspection of operating space is finished by the arithmetic of collision detection and the result of inspection is given. Then users can evaluate the assemblability of productions by the result.
