Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self-organizing and multi-hop network. There is no fixed infrastructure and central controlling nodes in the network. Each node in the network is not just a terminal but also functions as a router. So it is widely used in the environment where no pre-deployed infrastructure is available. The inherently vulnerable characteristics of MANET, such as open medium, dynamic topology and distributed cooperation, make it more vulnerable than normal mobile wireless network and traditional wired network. The network layer as one of the core layers of the MANET architecture, the research on security routing protocols looks very important. In this paper, the MANET characteristics, architecture and routing protocols were introduced firstly. Then a lot of different types of attacks aimed at those routing protocols were discussed. From analyzing the intentions and methods of these attacks and comparing the correspond solutions, it was found that the solutions were effective on dealing with attacks using modification, impersonation and fabrication, but the solutions for wormhole attacks were not so good. Based on deeply researching on wormhole attack, a position-based routing protocol was proposed, it used node's geographical position to make true neighbor relationship. In the last, it was the summarization and prospect.
