As the rapid development of information technology and the increasing demand of mobile communication, the integration of heterogeneous networks becomes the development trend of the next generation network. Due to its advantages such as it can work without any central infrastructures, and it can be organized rapidly and it is strongly destruct-resistant, mobile ad hoc network will play an important role in the next generation network. How to integrate mobile ad hoc network with Internet to provide flexible and convenient services for consumers has become a hot topic in mobile access field. Firstly, the problems of integration of mobile ad hoc network and Internet are analyzed in this paper. Then some existing integration schemes and gateway discovery & selection algorithms are presented, with the analyses on their merits and shortcomings. Secondly, a NAT-based integration scheme of mobile ad hoc network and Internet is implemented in Linux operating system, and an experimental platform of integration of mobile ad hoc and Internet is built. Then some performance analyses of the integrated network are done based on the platform. The experiments show that the proposed integration scheme is correct and feasible. Lastly, a method of gateway selection based on delay estimation is presented to overcome the shortcomings of the existing methods. In this method, first the end-to-end delay is estimated based on various factors, such as the load through the path from the mobile node to gateways, the channel competition level, the processing abilities of mobile nodes and the states of links. Then the process of gateway selection is executed by the mobile node who wants to access Internet based on the estimated delay. Theoretical analyses and simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm presented performances well.
