At present, high-definition digital TV is becoming a rapidly emerging industry, and it has broad prospects. This paper comes from a hard drive-based high-definition digital television set-top box, which downloads high-definition films to the local hard drive through the network to watch later. As a result of the large amount of data source of high-definition films, download speed has become the focus of this research.There are certain advantages in terms of speed for UDP protocol as compared with other protocols in the data transmission network, such as TCP, SCTP, however, its transmission reliability is poor. IETF proposed a RUDP (Reliable UDP) draft combined with advantages of TCP, SCTP and UDP, and on this basis, many documents proposed some schemes of RUDP. There may be room for improvement with transmission efficiency of traditional RUDP protocol by analysis, in this regard, this paper presents a supplement mechanism, and presents an enhanced reliable UDP transport protocol combined with retransmission mechanism, flow control and congestion control mechanisms, called ERUDP (Enhanced Reliable UDP).This paper designs a number of mechanisms for ERUDP protocol on the basis of traditional RUDP protocol, including the three-way handshake mechanism, 7retransmission timeout mechanism, supplement mechanism, retransmission mechanism, et al. On this basis, ERUDP protocol is applied to hard drive-based high-definition digital TV set-top boxes, tested and analyzed strictly. Results show that ERUDP is superior to TCP as well as the traditional RUDP in terms of speed. In the public network of 5Mbps, the time ERUDP spends on data transmission could save 70% preparing to TCP and 20% preparing to traditional RUDP. Furthermore, the advantages of the ERUDP protocol could reflect obviously in the situation of the greater the volume of data and worse network environment. At the same time, the reliability of data transmission is guaranteed by ERUDP.
