Solving the interoperability of wide-area distributed and heterogeneous digital libraries on Web has been become pivotal issues for the development of digital libraries. Both digital libraries and the grid are of characteristics like distributed, heterogeneous, autonomous, and so on. So we can address digital libraries interoperability issues with grid technology to achieve high degree share of a large scale digital resources and provide users with high quality information services under grid environment. The methods of digital libraries interoperability and its key technologies were mainly studyed in this paper based on OAI under grid enviroment.Firstly, there are three limitations about the methods of digital libraries interoperability based on OAI under grid environment: low speed in metadata harvesting; less efficiently in the similarity duplicate detection for metadata records at the collection nodes and metadata storage problems resulting in low efficiency in search. An improved three layer framework of digital libraries interoperability was proposed in this paper based on OAI-PMH, grid, mobile Agent, giving a new method for digital library interoperability.Secondly, based on improved interoperability framework, it was focused on paralleling metadata harvesting method using mobile Agent technology in the middle layer, including the design of HarvesterAgent and DPAgent, as well as the communications among HarvesterAgent, DPAgent and MasterAgent. The corresponding realization algorithm was designed. Simulated experiment showed that it effectively improved the speed of metadata harvesting with the instruction of mobile Agent into grid. Finally, in order to ensure the quality of metadata in the interoperability method, ameliorative similarity duplicate detection algorithm was proposed based on in depth of studying existing similarity duplicate detection algorithm for metadata records. The analysis and verification of algorithm was given by experimental method.
