Virtual reality technology simulates the real world comprehensively using computer. It has a wide range of applications in fields such as video production, game development, simulation of the battlefield environment. So how to simulate natural sceneries vividly in virtual scene is a hot and difficult topic in the research field of computer graphics. The effect of fountain can boost up the immersion feeling of virtual reality system. Particle system model possesses stochastic and dynamic character. It is able to simulate the dynamic features realisticly. Therefore, this paper adopts particle system to realize the simulation of fountain.Firstly, this paper introduces the previous algorithms of fountain simulation at home and abroad, then analyzes and summarizes them. This article introduces the basic principle and implementation steps. It also gives several important merits of particle system in modeling irregular natural sceneries. Data structure is simple and algorithm is easy to achieve. Secondly, we analyze the motion of true-life fountain body and obtain motion equation of water-bead particle of the fountain by using the principle of hydrokinetics and the method of original flow. Finally, we construct the model of fountain particle system by the means of modeling based on particle system, then do some research about the generation, the motion and the death of water-bead particle of the fountain. In order to enhance the visual effects, we adopted the method of fake-particle-viscosity to describe the phenomenon that several particles conglutinate up of differently big and small water-beads. We also use the texture mapping techniques, which can simulate the true effect of fountain. This system can simulate the fountain of different shapes by modifying certain parameters.The fountain simulation based on particle system is developed on Windows XP operating system by using VC++ 6.0 as the programming tools and the three-dimensional animation is supported by OpenGL. The effect of simulation looks realistic and meets real-time requirements.
