Generation and simulation of natural sceneries is an important area of Computer Graphics, including clouds, smoke, flame, rain, snow, etc. On the study of battlefield or game development, the rendering of flame effect is an important part. The reality of the flame effect greatly impacts on the overall effect of the system. So the research of the flame effect has great significance.Augmented reality is developed on the basis of virtual reality. Its purpose is to generate a real environment and virtual environment co-rendering scenes. It allows users to stand in them, and interact with real and virtual objects in real time, so users will feel the virtual scene and real scene blend together. In the design and development of augmented reality systems, we need to solve the geometry, lighting and timing consistency between virtual objects and real scenes. Currently the study of the lighting consistency in augmented reality is quite few. So the development of a real-time algorithm for the lighting consistency, and improving the realism of the augmented reality environment is still a great challenge. This paper combines the two areas. We render the flame effect in an augmented reality system. The three aspects of main works are as follows:First, we use the GPU particle system to render the flame effect, and add it in the augmented reality system. In order to enhance the realism of rendering the flame, we add a turbulence function and stochastic processes;Second, we study the lighting consistency between virtual flame light illumination and real scene object. Using the RT matrix data by tracking and the real scene object's position, size, material and other information, we could calculate the dynamic shadow effects of the real scene object, and render with the real scene image.Third, to further enhance the realism of the system, increasing the interaction between users and environment, the influence of wind is added. The flame effect will be influenced of wind, and the shadow effects of the real scene object are updated at the same time.At the end of this paper, a comprehensive summary and the discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the whole system are made. We also disscuss the further study direction of this area.
