With the development of the computer hardware and the computer graphics, scene simulation technology and visualization in scientific computing is widely applied in entertainment, urban planning, and military fields. In the military field, much more is applied in the land-based weapon simulation systems, but the research on scene simulation of underwater weapons is rare in our country. The study of the scene simulation of the torpedo will help the commander to make determinations much more effectively.This paper aims at the value simulation of a torpedo, set up the mathematics modles of describing torpedo motion, and optimizes the value, show the motion by the technique of computer graphics. This paper focus on the quaternion method and its application in 3D object rotation transformation. Firstly, a new method is presented on associating the mouse dragging motion with the Euler angles of a 3D model. Then, the rotation data of Euler angles is represented by the quaternion. Furthermore, a series rotation is realized by the multiplication operator of the quaternion. Finally, the interactive rotation of a 3D model is realized with mouse device. Also, this paper provided a 3D visual simulation for an underwater vehicle, in which orientation is simulated by a serial spherical interpolation based on the quaternion. The motion of the underwater vehicle became smooth and realistic.This simulation system was realized by using OpenGL and 3D Studio MAX based on Visual C++6.0 platform. This paper was mainly focused on the 3D object modeling method, the production of special effect, the model date drive, the angle of view transformation technology and the collision detection technique. The technology of blending, anti-aliasing, atomizing and sight tracking enhanced the simulation authenticity.The display technology, double buffer storage improve the system's processing speed. The submarine and torpedo's 3D models are established by 3D Studio MAX, which manufacture the seabed terrain, the sea water and so on.This system basically realizes the torpedo navigation visualization simulation.The result indicates that this 3D simulation system conforms to the requirement of the virtual reality, and has certain practical value.
