Edge detection is one of the most fundamental contents in image processing and analysis. Image edge includes position and outline and so on, which is one of the image fundamental characters. Edge detection is widely used in image analysis and processing such as feature description, image segmentation, image enhancement, pattern recognition and image compression etc. So detection and extraction methods of image edge and contour feature are always the research focus on the technology of image processing and analysis, on which the new theories and new methods are constantly emerging. But now most of the evaluations of edge detection operators are still evaluation of detection results. In order to solve this problem,this paper researches on results and real-time of edge detection operator in some special condition of hardware and software.First, some classical edge detection algorithms are researched in this paper, including difference edge detection, Roberts, Sobel, Prewitt, Laplace, LoG, Canny etc, and mathematics principle and application scope of the algorithms above are introduced in details, programming in Visual C++ 6.0 on static images, obtain the processing results of some kinds of algorithms, making horizontal comparison to the detection results, point out advantage and disadvantage of these methods.In order to study performance of edge detection algorithms on moving target image,putting up a experimental platform consisted of TMS320DM642, CCD camera, servo motor and servo actuator, using this platform to research feasibility of operators in application . Using Data Save function of CCS, obtain the experimental image data of these operators, and transform data to BMP image, do horizontal comparison the results of different operators in same speed, analyzing the advantage and disadvantage of these algorithms in moving object image edge detection. The results of experiment show a useful reference in the later phase image processing and a useful application reference in edge detection real time system.At last, shows the difficult issues in image edge detection, and proposes the solution. Some indexes of evaluation about the advantage and disadvantage of edge detection results are proposed to solve the problem that how to evaluate results of operators.
