Along with the progress of urbanization, the amount of septic tanks is increasing. Due to lack of supervision and delays in dredging, the related safety issues becomes critical, which has a great influence on people's daily life. Therefore the remote monitoring of the methane density in the cesspool has a practical significance.The article first reviews the state-of-art researches and technologies about the remote monitoring system of methane density. We develop a system based on ARM9(S3C2410) and embedded Linux. This system employs the infrared methane density detection technology and incorporates GPRS communication module. This system benefits from the wide range coverage of GPRS network and low-power of embedded system. The framework of the system is as follows. The methane detection module extracts the methane density from the cesspool, and then the methane density information is transmitted to the master control module through CAN bus. The master control module evaluate and make the decision whether the density exceeds the safety threshold, and sends the data to the monitoring center through GPRS module when exceeded.The article has established an embedded development environment based on the arm-Linux, completing the basic hardware circuit and the software design. The hardware design are divided into two parts including main-control module and expansion module, which is helpful to the maintenance and upgrade; it proposes to use GPRS wireless communication technology to carries out the communication between the monitoring scene and the monitoring center. This paper describes a power supply circuit, clock circuit, reset circuit, JTAG interface circuit, the serial circuit, GPRS module interface circuit hardware components such as circuit design and design process, and gives some of the main circuit. The software design includes, according to the functions which is needed to be implemented, clipping and porting embedded Linux kernel into ARM processor, completing the compilation of the related drivers, building the communication function of GPRS module, and giving out the related software's designing schemes of the monitor center.The embedded long-distance monitoring system of methane density has a strong processing capability, a good man-machine interaction, and easy to upgrading. This system is highly applicable and has a promising prospect. To meet the demands of different applications, the potential improvements includes miniaturization and integration with intelligence and so on.
