With the development of embedded technology and application, the serial port becomes the necessary peripherial equipment on new DSP chips. It is an important interface of DSP which communicates with other serial equipments outside. The number of serial port signals is less, so it can decrease the number of chip pin and hardware efficiently, which is very suitable for various embedded application of DSP. Therefore, the research and design of the simple and flexible serial port which is of multi-function, high performance, low-power consuming and programable is important for DSP development.With 0.25μm CMOS technology and full custom design method, the serial port unit has been designed and realized on the X-DSP, a thorough simulation and analysis are given in this paper. The main content and production of this paper are showed as follows.1. This paper analyzes and researches the theory, method and technology of serial port unit, and designs the architecture of serial port unit according to the designing rules of X-DSP processor.2. Three serial port units are designed, the key technology in this paper is analyzed, the function of serial port unit is verified in entire chip circumstance based on the module simulation.3. The layout of serial port is designed and verified. The total layout area of a serial port unit is 616*1410μm~2. Through layout verification, the max frequency of the serial port is a half of CPU clock frequency, the transmit rate can reach to 6.25Mbyte/s, and achieve less area and higher serial transmit rate.X-DSP processor has been taped out successfully, and it can completely satisfy the request of design. Finally, the result proves that the serial port unit is correct as the important peripherial equipment.
