Video surveillance system plays an important role in the social life. Video storage is one of core technology of network video surveillance systems. The structure of storage systems, storage devices, as well as the high-performance, reliable storage and real-time, effective accessed video are concerned for storage technology reserch. With the large-scale integrated circuits and manufacturing process development, removable storage devices increase the speed and capacity significantly, and promote to deploy a more flexible embedded video surveillance system.Linux is now being popular used in embedded system because of its kernel performance. In this paper, based on the embedded video surveillance system and embedded Linux2.6 kernel, the design of video storage system is studied and analyzed; especially, the storage methods and storage strategy of video storage systems are expatiated, and a basic video server-side storage system is implemented.Video servers collect and store video data, at the same time frequently interacting with the clients and responding to customer's requests. Multi-threading technology for the handling of such cases have an advantage. This paper designed and achieved the storage method of encoding video established on the removable storage devices by use of Linux's multi-threading technology in the embedded video server; and made the system support the Plug & Play ability of USB storage devices through the proc mechanism of UNIX for improving the ease of use.The features of video streaming and video accessing determine the storage method is different from the text file. This paper adopted the strategy of pre-allocation storage space to store video and optimize the accessing performance of video files; further more designed backup strategy and analyzed the problem how to correctly decode, introducing a method to resolve it.Finally, the paper tested the USB Flash Disk by use of the benchmark of file system. The performances of read,write,reread and rewrite were tested before and after the use of storage strategy. The test results showed that the reading and writing performance was improved after application storage stratege.These techniques make the large-capacity portable storage devices better support the video storage, as well as flexible deployment of embedded video surveillance.
