The pavement roughness is an important factor which affects travel quality and also one of assessments in road construction and maintenance quality management, but our country's pavement roughness testing methods, their used techniques and tools are quite backward, therefore there is an urgent need for the research and development of new methods and new technology. This paper proposes a pavement roughness testing method based on inertial benchmark, and introduces inertial benchmark unit (acceleration sensor) in a laser pavement roughness testing system, to calibrate the measurement error in laser range-finders by using acceleration sensors, and gives a formula for the road profile by using this method. This paper describes the system's overall structure and each components, the system itself fulfils optical--electronic integration in pavement roughness testing and computer automation. The computer is the key of the system hardware which also includes distance sensors, laser range-finders, acceleration sensors. Meanwhile, the system software taking Windows 2000 as its operating platform, using the object-oriented programming language Visual C + + to develop. Furthermore, the paper gives an introduction of the system software design and implementation in details, including synchronous acquisition and joint treatment of two output signals in laser range-finders and acceleration sensors, signal acquisition curves, data processing results ,database access and so on.Through the calibration experiments in MTS810 testing system produced by the United States MTS (Mechanical Testing & Simulation) company, and the actual road test, the results show the detection method based on inertial benchmark in pavement roughness testing is feasible.
