Along with the rapid development of the Internet, more and more new problems occured, the most pressing problem need to be resolved is the IPv4 addresses will be exhausted. Therefore, the IETF proposed a new protocol which used substitute for the current IPv4 protocol. Currently, native IPv6 backbone has been successfully deployed. However, vast applications and services still stay in IPv4 network. Thus, interconnection of IPv4 networks over IPv6 backbone is required.Furthermore, when IPv4 networks and IPv6 networks are coexistence, how can interconnect with IPv4 networks and IPv6 networks become a important problem. Now integrated IPv4/IPv6 interoperability solutions have become a hot research.A lot of new services and network protocols come forth while the bursting increment of Internet. The network equipments based on the software running on general purpose processor or the hardware of ASIC are difficult to meet flexibility and performance both. A new processor based on ASIP named network processor appeared. It provides the network facilitise flexibility like general purpose processor and high performance like ASIC, reduces the risk of time and money. Now there are many domestic and international research institutions and company are researching IPv4/IPv6 Interconnection solutions, But early research has focused on the general-purpose processors or ASICs.Because foreign IPv6 development is early, so the main research has focused on the IPv4 tunnel Packaging IPv6 packet and IPv4/IPv6 translation. It has only just begun that IPv6 as the backbone network and IPv4 as a network edge research. Tsinghua University put forward a IPv4 over IPv6 solutions for IPv4 network interconnection over IPv6 backbone without explicit tunneling. It has been recognized by IETF, the IETF have set up a special working group to study this program and standardize the framework. Now, IETF published a related Draft and RFC.This paper is besed on the NAT-PT Address Conversion System realized in our lab, and we add a new 4over6 tunnel (IPv4 over IPv6 tunnel) module and improve the IPv4/IPv6 high-performance interoperability mechanism. The paper focuses on 4over6 tunnel principle and the detailed implementation process on IXP2400. After testing, the system can achieve on-line speed in IPv4 network and IPv6 network transparent interoperability. It can be used as IPv4/IPv4 network interoperability solutions for high-performance backbone of the Internet.
