With the development of computer and the popularity of communication technology in people's lives, the latest communication technologies are introduced in more and more various industries, such as industry, medical, teaching and so on. The automated test system which is composed by the electronic test technology, computer technology, communication technology and software technology becames the latest trend in the industrial instrument area. Therefore, the achievement of VISA-based software architecture communication has a very important practical significance.The main research topic in this paper is how to use the latest VISA software architecture control the universal hardware device. It is transform the hardware design into software control and achieve the functions through the virtual instrument technology, to get a shorter development time, faster communication speed and better accuracy. This method achieved a multi-interface communication module which is portable, has a faster speed and can be easily expanded and operated.First of all, according to the characteristics of electronic measuring instruments, this project designed the hardware structure of a multi-interface communication module, set up the hardware circuit, compiled program code of a series of ARM7-based LPC2148 and RS-232C serial interface and USB universal serial bus, achieved the VISA software architecture to control multi-interface communication I/O software and analysis of the SCPI command. Then, use the development tools to compile, run and debug program, test and improve the system. Finally, give a typical application of the VISA software architecture to the multi-interface communication system in the smart instrumentation, which achieved a long-range instrumentation measurement, parameter setting, the controling of data read and get the desired results. The successful operating of the system proved the feasibility and effectiveness of multi-interface communication based on VISA software architecture, the broad application prospects and promotion value is also showed through the application of VISA software architecture to control multi- interface communication technology.
