The world's first low-loss optical fiber developed in 1970 opened the era of optical communication, which boosted in the next few decades. Communication nowadays such as telephone main lines, CATV and broadband network base deeply on optical communication, also new optical-depended devices and applications keep emerging. Optical communication steps us into Information Society, and it contributes even more than communication based on copper wires. The development of optical communication relies on optical devices and optoelectronic devices and promotes their developments on the other hand. Optical transceiver, as one of optoelectronic device, has played an important role in optical communication. The optical transceiver performance test consists of transmitting test and receiving test both of which require special equipments which are usually expensive, functional specified and hard to operate. Transmitting and receiving test can't be performed together because they require different equipment combinations, which make testing system nowadays complicated and inefficient. This automatic testing system aims to solve these problems. In our design a computer is used as the control unit which combines and controls all the testing equipments so that an integrated testing environment is created. With computer's intelligent control mutual operating is reduced. The parallel technology enables transceiver being loaded and unloaded while other transceivers are tested which improves the whole testing speed. To improve the testing speed, an optimized testing method is introduced along with an analysis of parallel test of transmitting and receiving.Optical communication and optical transceiver testing are introduced at the beginning, and then the requirements to improve the testing system are proposed. After that the hardware structure and the implementation principle together with software design are presented in details. At the last, we give the methods to improve system performance based on analyses.
