As it advances, the virtual reality (VR) technology is widely used in the designing of mechanical products. Using the VR-based CAD system, we can design models of products in a virtual designing environment which provides a real feeling of design and a convenient designing method for designers. The virtual designing environment can help to decrease lose, cut the cost, shorten the development cycle, improve the quality of products and provide a feeling of performance for designers and consumers before a product is manufactured. Designing of mechanical products with the help of the virtual designing environment will be of great practical significance.This paper will firstly show the relevant information of VR technology, make a prospect of VR applications, highlight the introduction of the application of VR technology in the field of mechanical design, and point out that the virtual design system environment plays an important role in the field of virtual designing. The introduction of tools for the study of virtual design system environment is followed by. The functions of tools and the relationship between tools are introduced in detail. The format of OpenFlight file is studied and discussed. And a MFC/Vega framed simulation environment, namely the common browser, is studied and implemented, which include displaying of scenes, transformation and saving of positions, technology of collision detection, movements of DOF nods and hiding/displaying of them, etc. And then, the application of technologies of industrial rendering is put forward after the introduction of the industrial rendering, which include the study and implement of technologies on settings of illumination, changing of textures, and increasing of dynamic texture. Then, the technology on the information exchanging of simulation CAD models is studied by jointing the designing environment and the database. The whole paper is summed up in the last place, and the future research directions are pointed out.This paper is aimed at showing the points and difficulties of relative technologies with the help of application examples, and thereby probes into the pivotal technologies of virtual designing environment. Many problems existing in the virtual designing environment or unsolved before are solved by researching relevant technologies, which means the system could be improved infidelity and convenience.
