As microelectronic, sensor technology and telecommunication technology eveloped, wireless sensor networks go forward rapidly in recent years. Furthermore, some implementations for either civil use or military use are also put into practice. Because of those achievements, the development of wireless sensor networks has a bright future. The ZigBee technology is a standard wireless network protocol designed for low-speed wireless sensors. It can be competitive in the market and also popular in practice, especially for its low power consumption and low cost.This paper introduces the characteristic of ZigBee in detail. It emphasizes the advantage of low consumption in low-speed wireless sensors, with comparing with the other popular wireless protocols. Because the definition of the physical layer in ZigBee is based on 802.15.4 criterion, the definition is definitive. However, the definitions in network layer are different among companies. In addition, they brought forth the choice and support of routine in algorithm of their respective own. Therefore, this paper focuses on the routine algorithm in ZigBee.On one hand, saving power is important in ZigBee networks. In ZigBee tree-structure, the nodes' in higher layer are responsible for managing sub-nodes and part of data routine. So they consume more energy. On the other hand, dead nodes in higher layer result in network separation and degrade the performance of the whole network. Obviously, it is important that avoiding high power consumption and dead nodes in higher layer. We primarily analyzed ZigBee routine algorithm and AODVjr algorithm. Then their disadvantages were found. According to these findings, we brought forth energy-balanced algorithm based on tree-structure. We elaborated from routine overhead calculating model to the implementation of routine algorithm. Finally, with OMNET+ emulation experiment, higher layer nodes' situation in the energy-balanced algorithm compared with that in AODVjr algorithm. The validity of the conclusion is convinced.At the end of this paper, we put the theory into practice to design a smart-home system. Its outer network utilizes internet and GSM, while its inner network utilizes ZigBee. This paper elaborates from hard ware structure to layered structure in protocol. The family network using ZigBee technology is easy in mounting and expanding. Ith also realized the self management of the home-used sensor network. It has got the high value in applying.
