Network video surveillance is a brand new way for surveillance application. Due to the sensitivity and importance of the content transported by video surveillance system, high level of security is critical. For this reason, this thesis introduces a method of encryption media stream by employ Secure Socket Layer (SSL).This thesis analyses the particular threats that a video surveillance is facing, compares various cryptographic algorithms and security protocols, and proposes a secure network transportation solution for digital videos. The video surveillance system consists of Windows clients and embedded Linux network video server, whose core is Hi3510 System on Chip (SoC). A hardware driver is implemented to accelerate SSL processing. The RTP server based on SSL is designed to support UDP/TCP/SSL simultaneously, satisfying specific requirements under diverse network environment. SSL proxy is used to accommodate software from third-party whose source code is not available.Tests have manifested that the protocol conform to SSL standard, and system performance is not impacted by the high strength encryption. The throughput of SSL is greatly improved, and turns out not to be bottleneck of the whole system. The concurrency of system remains the same level as the version without adopting encryption transportation. In conclusion, applying SSL protocol to video surveillance system is solid and efficient system security solution.
