In order to meet the rapid development of telecommunication network technology and the various demands of new telecommunication business, ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Sector) presented a unified and integrated maintenance and management solution for the telecommunication network - TMN (Telecommunication Management Network). It allowed network management system to management network under the standard architecture of TMN, in accordance with the standard interface and the standard information format to exchange management information.Although TMN adopted the object-oriented modeling technology based on OSI (Open System Interconnection Reference Model) system management, it didn't make in-depth study of how to construct the management system and how to achieve the interoperability between them. CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) is now a mature distributed object-oriented technology. It's especially suitable for rapid business construction and effective management of resources and business under the opening telecommunication market environment. Java provides object-oriented, cross-platform programming language and operating environment. The Object written by Java can communicate with CORBA between objects without considering communication details. Distributed network management application based on CORBA can use Java objects as standard system user interface. The TM2000 Element Management System (EMS) combines layered management thought from TMN and distributed object computing technology from Java/CORBA. It expands horizontally from original minimum system and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) minimum system in accordance with SDH or MSTP (Multi-Service Transport Platform) equipments of specified manufacture. It uses client, server and adapter three layers as vertical distributed architecture. For its south interface, it can be compatible with demands of equipments from different manufactures through SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), Q3 or Qx interface adapter. For its north interface, it can be used to communicate with client through CORBA interface. In addition, it can be optional open to the upper layer Network Management System (NMS) in order to achieve network management at different levels and meet the demands of service providers. The TM2000 EMS has a clear multi-layered structure and good openness, flexibility, scalability and maintainability. It contains NE (Network Element) and subnet management functions at EMS level and partial functions at NMS level. It's easy to be expanded and upgraded, thereby reducing the development and maintenance costs of the network management software.
