With the rapid development of computer technologies, and the world become more informational, network-based and intelligent, the embedded technology, with high reliability, small size, low power consumption advantages, which have more advantages than general PC system, is widely applied in lots of fields. GPS positioning and navigation technology combined with the computer technology have become one of the most forefront information and communication technologies.GPS technology is more used in Geodesy and vehicle location than individual application recently, therefore, the study of handheld personal GPS positioning and navigation system have broad prospects. In this situation, embedded ARM is more choosed to use. In order to play its excellent characteristics of high-performance and low power consumption, this system bave designed to be a practical and feasible handheld positioning and navigation system based on ARM and GPS, combined with the powerful and low-cost embedded Linux operation system.This thesis includes the following parts:1. GPS positioning and navigation technology and how to design a positioning and navigation system based on ARM microprocessors have been studied. The hardware and software development platform accordencd to this system's need bave been built. It's mainly about the choice and connective of hardware modules, also inclued the migration of bootloader and operation system kernel, and the root file system making.2. Communication fuction between GPS module and microprocessor, map display fuction and human-computer interaction fuction are designed and implemented. The procdure of implementing each fuction modules include the design of device divers and applications. The GPS module sends real-time positioning information to processor by using RS-232 interface. Implemented the interaction fuction on LCD screen by use the MiniGUI support system to design electronic map display and control applications.3. Testing each fuction modle, and by analysising deficiencies of the system fuction, how to improve this system is also given.
