This paper developed a micron-level automatic measuring instrument based on precise machinery, by the use of photoelectric sensors, rotary encoders, linear motion units and dsPIC microcontroller, The instrument achieve high accuracy in lower cost, and is suitable for measuring large quantities of simple geometry parts.This article introduced the design and implementation process of the measuring instrument from several aspects, such as the measuring principle, mechanical structure, electrical control systems and software design. The article described the measuring principle of the instrument and the working principle of key components at first. Then, the whole system was designed according to the measuring principle. In addition, the research analyzed the demands of the function of the measuring instrument, precision and electrical system for the mechanical structure, to make an overall planning, and to carry out a detailed analysis and design for important parts. The article also described the electrical control systems from the aspects ofthe power system, control system, drive system and the man-machine interface. At last, programs such as motor control, photoelectric sensor testing, data processing and measuring function were introduced..In this paper, two experiments were carried out: In the motor area, LMD18200 motor drive system and PID control experiments showed that the motor control system runs stably and has a good state.; in the measuring instrument area, the accuracy and the reliability experiments proved that the measuring instrument has good accuracy and high reliability. Based on these experiments, the error sources of the measuring instrument were analyzed, and some suggestions of improvement were made.
